About Vincent Ronfard

I am a cell biologist who is passionate about developing products that help people heal. My approach to research and collaboration has been shaped by my inter-disciplinary training (farming, engineering, and cell biology), my exposure to different cultures, and my core values – Creativity, Diversity and, Humanity. I began my career as a farmer in the North of France and Togo, West Africa, where I worked with farmers to create a food cooperative and to develop soybean culture. These experiences cemented my belief that collaboration and diverse perspectives support innovation. It also strengthened my desire to work with others on high impact projects. On my return to France, to earn an engineering degree I began to work on the cultivation of Human cells. During that time, I had the chance to meet with Professor Howard Green and collaborators from the Harvard Medical School. They encouraged me to develop my research on skin grafting further during my PhD in Paris. I did and it was used to save the life of badly burned victims (Ronfard et al, 1991, Ronfard et al, 2000) and, more recently, to transplant cultured corneal grafts in blind individuals (Rama et al., 2010). Since then, I have dedicated my career to skin biology and to the development of treatments for wounds at Organogenesis in the US or at Modex Therapeutics Ltd., a Swiss biotech company. While at L’Oréal, I manage a team of 40 researchers across the US, China and Europe to work on skin models and aging. Since then, at Smith and Nephew and now at the College of Pharmacy, my work has taken a more strategic and managerial role. I consider myself lucky to be able to work with cells and people. As a farmer, biologist, manager and teacher, I have been continuously working on developing human potential (that of others but also my own). There is nothing more rewarding. This is why I am excited to continue to work on healing and regeneration.
