I've been hammering away at this stuff for more than three decades since falling into the technology rabbit hole at the beginning of the "Microcomputer Revolution" - Apple ][ with two external 5.25" floppy drives, 48Kb RAM, and a copy of VisiCalc. No formal computer education but a keen sense of the possibilities for what these "toys" (as the mainframe guys called them in 1979) could do down the road. My bride still talks about the night I came home following my first look at the Apple Lisa and told her, "I think I just saw the future."As I stare down retirement, I have two remaining goals: get the technology out of the way and change the language of There's-the-Business-Side-then-there's-the-IT-Side. To the first, we're still a long way from the dream of the technology working so well, and being so intuitive, that our caregivers don't have to think about what to do when they use it. I want the technology to enhance their ability to do their job and it, far too often, still gets in their way.To the second, we have to change the conversation from "You IT guys need to learn about the business" (which I believe we have done a great job of over the last two decades), to "We are the business"; every bit as much as finance, hr, facilities, marketing, etc. We in the technology fields are as guilty as others in this regard. Every time we see that reference in our own literature we need to rage against the darkness and explain that the problem these days is that others need to understand the limitations, as well as the possibilities, of technology; 'they' have done a miserable job understanding this.Thus endeth the diatribe.
