About Vinícius Oliari Couto Dias

I was born in Vila Velha, Espírito Santo, Brazil. I received my B.Sc. in Electrical Engineering and M.Sc. in Mathematics from the Federal University of Espírito Santo (UFES), Brazil. During my Bachelor, I joined the UFES Telecommunications Laboratory (LabTel). While working in LabTel, we mathematically modeled coherent and direct detection optical systems. Using those models, we derived closed form expressions for the bit-error-rate of each system.During my Master’s, I collaborated with the Heavy Oil Characterization Methodology Development and Research Laboratory (LabPetro). In this collaboration, we developed a system that could predict petroleum properties from spectrometer data (a regression problem). This system combined Wavelet theory (which was the main topic of my master's dissertation) with Fuzzy systems and genetic algorithm.I have made my PhD at TU Eindhoven. My research topic was focused on mathematical modeling for the nonlinear fiber channel. In this topic, we developed a new model for the highly-nonlinear regime, which was published in Nature Communications. We also developed an improved version of this model, which resulted in a highly-scored paper in the 2020 European Conference on Optical Communications. I have also worked in machine learning applications for optical fibers. These applications included receiver optimization and autoencoder systems for joint optimization of transmitter and receiver.After finishing my PhD, I became a Postdoctoral Researcher at TU Eindhoven in the topics of machine learning for digital audio processing and mathematical modeling for optical fiber communications. Shortly after, I became an information system engineer at NXP, where I worked with integrated communication and sensing for the next generation of wireless communication.I am currently a senior optical engineer at Infinera.
