 Communicates with customers to establish performance goals and objectives and discusses material and design alternatives with customer design engineers. Operates CAD software to generate highly complex drawings based on design specs, following general design principles. Applies ingenuity and knowledge of a broad range of porous plastic manufacturing processes in determining the selection, layout, detail, and explanatory notes of drawings. Works with or supervises engineering tech(s) in developing prototypes for complex products and/or processes. Selects optimal material to meet customer functional requirements and balances customer and manufacturing requirements to optimize geometry for manufacturability. Designs experiments for testing and verification plans for new products, and coordinates tests of prototypes or existing production parts. Performs Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) and documents test results and prepares statistical and analytical summaries, using both standard and ad hoc formats. Prepares customized reports, analyses, or technical bulletins for customers as requested or as appropriate to document performance characteristics under various operational conditions. May prepare technical documentation or white papers for marketing materials. Conducts or supervises field testing at the customer locations, and participates in product development meetings with customer engineers. Coordinates work with and selection of outside vendors for capabilities not available internally. Responsible for the development, troubleshooting, and enhancement of multiple existing products to improve performance and customer satisfaction. Prepares status reports and project plans as needed. Coordinates transfer of significant new products from design to production and collaborates with manufacturing engineering, process engineering, quality, and other disciplines to ensure consistency of quality output, within tolerances established by the customer.
