Once upon a time, in a far away land called high school, my AP statistics teacher told me that if I was good at statistics, I would make a lot of money. I thought to myself “I’m good at statistics. I like money!” So I went to the University of Connecticut on scholarship to study math and statistics.After graduating, I was ready to swim in my money like I was Scrooge McDuck. I interviewed with some top pharmaceutical companies as well as marketing companies, but – here’s the thing – my good hearted AP statistics teacher never told me I would need a masters or PhD to do the things that I really wanted to do with statistics. As I walked around a lake—probably with the theme song from Dawson’s Creek in my head—contemplating what to do with my life, I decided to take a job with a test preparation company that you have definitely heard of... you see, I always enjoyed teaching as well; I tutored in the statistics lab about UConn and found it to be quite rewarding.Fast forward a year: I was promoted to a master level tutor, something that usually takes 3 years.Fast forward another two years: I was promoted to premier level tutor, something that usually takes about 10 years. I enjoyed meeting new families, working with students, and helping students get into their first choice colleges. However, I was growing a little bit disheartened with the company and how everything was so regulated for the student. It didn’t matter what was best for the students, it mattered what was best for the company‘s bottom line. I’m sure you’ve heard this story before – stop me if you have – but I went off and started my own company with the intention of using statistics to analyze student trends as well as test trends and personalizing education that way.That company would eventually develop into Test Prep Wizards 🧙‍♂️. Along the way, I also helped found the educational component of Connecticut Speed School – now lovingly known as Academic Advisors.
