About Violet Phillips
I worked in education for a large part of my career.I visited The Gambia first in 2011 with my husband.. We both loved the country, the fabulous bird life there and the wonderful people. We wanted to do something to help the poorest of the people and so we worked first with a brilliant charity Friends of The Gambia Association sponsoring over 200 youngsters through school. We have now given this up in favour of working to provide cataract operations for those Gambians unable to find the cash for this life changing operation. It became apparent that many young women were being prevented from completing their education because they were required to child mind as an elder became disabled through unnecessary sight loss. A tragedy.Our charity Cataracts are Curable: The Gambian Project is privileged to have partnered up with Sheikh Sayed Regional Eye Care Centre in Kanifing who manage the operations.We collect money for 50 operations at a time, and the operations are conducted at an eye camp over a day or few weeks. We receive a full report about the operations that were done which we publish on our website.This new charity has just completed its 150th cataract operation. With the financial help of our supporters I work with my husband and daughter to make this happen. See: www.cataractsarecurable.org

I regularly speak to groups to get publicity and donations for our worthy cause.I plan to make bids for available funds as we gain charity commission status. Currently we are registered with HMRC and are able to claim gift aid.I write our blog as and when a cataract camp is complete, and I use social media to give information about our successes to inform our current supporters and gain further support from individuals or organisations.

CurrentI now visit two of the DBA members, I take one out for a drive to the Garden Centre, to the shops or to the beach for some fresh air, we have interesting conversations and coffee. We occasionally stay home if she is not up to going out. The other lady just likes a chat and for me to check her diary and post.I also have been 'shopping' for someone who is completely blind.Very occasionally drive members to their club.

Remap’s unique pieces of special equipment are tailor-made and given free to the people who need them. Remap has 80 panels across England, Wales and northern Ireland, and helps 4000 people with disabilities each year.

Fotga is a small charity run by people who have been to The Gambia and seen the difficulty that children have in becoming educated. These people are doing something about it. Please see www.fotga.org.uk.My job is to help those who want to take on a child. £15 a month pays for their education, uniform, books, lunch every day a school bag and shoes.
