About Vitor A. S. Moura

Vitor, a graduate student from Brazil, is currently pursuing his PhD at the University of Florida's Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (IFAS) at the Everglades Research and Education Center (EREC), under the mentorship of Professor Katia Xavier. He obtained his Bachelor's degree in Agronomy from the University of Viçosa in Brazil.During his undergraduate studies, Vitor specialized in the biological control of plant-parasitic nematodes, a field that ignited his academic curiosity and professional passion. For his Ph.D. research, Vitor transitioned his focus to plant pathology, specifically investigating fungal pathogens affecting sweet corn in Florida. His research concentrates on tar spot (Phyllachora maydis) and Northern Corn Leaf Blight (NCLB) (Exserohilum turcicum), both of which are recognized as significant threats to corn production in the United States (U.S.) due to their potential to substantially reduce crop yields. These diseases rank among the top ten most destructive corn diseases in the U.S., underscoring the importance and impact of his research in agronomic and plant protection sciences. His work holds the potential to enhance the understanding of disease mechanisms, develop fungicide programs, survival studies, identify resistant crop varieties, and explore sustainable approaches to combatting these fungal pathogens. In addition to that, he also conducts population studies to further investigate the genetic and pathogenic diversity and dynamics of these pathogens within the region of Florida.
