Team Leader @BiofabUniversity Of California, Berkeley Aug 2010 - Jul 2012Berkeley, Ca, UsThe BIOFAB: International Open Facility Advancing Biotechnology (BIOFAB) was founded in December 2009 as the world's first biological design-build facility under the leadership of Profs. Adam Arkin, Drew Endy and Jay Keasling. A joint effort between University of California, Berkeley, Stanford University, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, BioBricks Foundation and Synthetic biology Engineering Research Center (SynBERC).BioFab projects are designed to produce broadly useful collections of standard biological parts that can be made freely available to both academic and commercial users, while also enabling the rapid design and prototyping of genetic constructs. • Developed Generalized ‘Expression Operating System’ that will be useful for designing and programming gene expression in a predictable manner at genome-scale engineering efforts • Managed multiple projects and professional staff in designing, building, and testing a collection of engineered genetic components that control constitutive RNA production, RNA processing and degradation, translation initiation, protein degradation and DNA replication in bacteria• Developed a method that allows for reliable functional coupling of prokaryotic transcription and translation control elements with user-specific coding sequences for genes of interest• Spearheaded the effort in designing, engineering and characterizing more than 300 promoters, 100 terminators, 150 translational coupling elements and more than 2000 element-element combinatorial libraries in E coli bacteria. • Lead predictive modeling approaches for uncovering sequence-activity relationships and developed multivariate data analysis pipeline -
Project ScientistBerkeley Lab Mar 2010 - Aug 2010Berkeley, Ca, UsWorked at Joint Bioenergy Institute (JBEI) to develop novel synthetic biology tools to regulate predictable protein expression with applications in bio-fuel research. • Developed a minimal complexity, maximally predictive data-driven sequence-activity model based on experimental dataset to design thousands of translation repressors and an entire panel of orthogonal regulators for reliable engineering of gene expression in E coli• The modeling approach is generally applicable to engineer other RNA elements -
Postdoctoral FellowBerkeley Lab May 2009 - Mar 2010Berkeley, Ca, UsSenior Postdoc fellow, Arkin Lab at Joint Bioenergy Institute. Main objective of this work was to devise methodologies to engineer transcription and translation processes to develop predictable protein expression systems. Worked in the field of Synthetic Biology and developed a family of orthogonal antisense RNA based translation regulators. Workplace: Joint BioEnergy Institute (JBEI); A six-institution partnership led by Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, JBEI is based in the San Francisco Bay Area, which is fast becoming a hub of renewable energy research and development. Research at the DOE Joint BioEnergy Institute (JBEI) is using the tools of synthetic biology to produce the next generation of biofuels -
Postdoctoral FellowUniversity Of California, San Francisco (Ucsf) Aug 2005 - Apr 2009San Francisco, California, UsWorked in Prof. Carol Gross's lab at the interface of computational biology and high throughput experimental quantitative biology. Objective was to develop sophisticated promoter prediction model from invivo and invitro transcription data on alternative transcription factor in E. coli. • High throughput experiments and multivariate data analysis techniques were used to obtain biophysical relationships between promoter activity of alternative sigma factors and promoter sequences• This is the first comprehensive study of complete target set of sigma factors -
ConsultantQb3 New Venture Consulting (Qnvc), Ucsf 2008 - 2009• Member of a consulting organization at UCSF that advises biotechnology start-ups founded on intellectual property invented in university laboratories • Worked with a team of 7 graduate students and post-docs to identify the market opportunity, market entry, and FDA regulatory policies for a start-up developing an anti-microbial surface coating for medical devices• Conducted thorough analysis on various market sizes, trends, drivers, competition, and pricing. Created a mathematical model to uncover the relationship between pricing and efficiency of antimicrobial coating.
