About Vijay Narasimhan

I am currently the Global Head of Strategy, Innovation, and Payments at PayPal, with over 20 years of experience in the Fintech and banking sectors. My mission is to empower individuals and businesses with innovative and accessible financial solutions that enhance their lives and livelihoods. As the leader of a cross-functional team of data scientists, program managers, product managers, and platform engineers, I manage the Global Credit Risk Strategy and Innovation for PayPal's $25 billion Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL) business. I leverage AI and bureau-based risk strategies to optimize loan approval rates, manage a $200 million risk budget, and launch BNPL products in multiple countries. I also serve as the India site lead for BNPL Credit Risk, overseeing operations in Chennai, Bangalore, and London. Previously, I was a Lead/Group Product Manager at PayPal, where I spearheaded the UKFPS, SEPA and UK direct debits and credit transfers like BACS, CHAPS, UKDD, Global Open Banking and EMEA Transaction Expense Savings programs. I built a new Open Banking platform that enabled instant onboarding and payment experiences for PayPal customers in Germany, UK, and the US. I also implemented TE savings initiatives that reduced transaction costs and enhanced customer value which resulted in enabling more business for PayPal. Before joining PayPal, I worked in the banking sector for six years, where I gained valuable operational and IT experience with renowned institutions like Goldman Sachs and Standard Chartered Bank. I have a B.E. degree in Electronics and Instrumentation from the University of Madras and a passion for cricket.

    Senior Product Manager
    Paypal Feb 2012 - Feb 2015
    San Jose, Ca, Us
Got promoted after India launch and the company offered a role in Mumbai to lead the product for India domestic business launch and manage X border however the global payments product organization counter offered for a EMEA bank product lead role in Berlin. I took the latter to gain international exposure. High level Summary below:1. Market research/Business case development – for the initiatives below, I first had to do perform research and put a case for the company to invest on this, prioritization in a large organization is tough and this one was challenging. 2. UK Faster payments launch for PayPal – Launched UKFPS for both funds in and funds out. UKFPS is instant transfer and works like a card txn where we have separate Auth/Capture layers and the settlement is completely a different offline layer. I am an industry expert in UKFPS, can provide people’s references and endorsements on this. 3. Partner management for UK FPS – RM for both Barclays and Vocalink (processing partner, now part of master card). The role includes pricing negotiations, volume projections, yearly audit completion, treasury (fund) management, legal, compliance management. 4. Multiple transaction expense savings initiatives – Example: UK’s card interchange fees were so high (now Durbin Amendment has put a cap of 21 cents) back then that we had to increase and cannibalize card volume with bank, launched couple of products 1) UKIB initiative which increased the bank funding incrementally by 10% gaining 5m$ in bottom line for year one. 2) Behavior based bank verification is another initiative which gave us 10m$5. Start of SEPA – SEPA initiative is a huge multi year program and I had a great opportunity to lead the whole program, first phase was to grandfather ~60M EU customers to IBAN ready, this tactical and technical project had 99% conversion rate which was a huge success. First 3 years of my time in Berlin were formative years in Europe, after which the growth was rapid.

    1. Attended laborious Product management training for 6 months soon after joining PayPal2. Immediately was given a project to introduce bank top up integration partnering with DBS bank in Singapore, this product was instant hit as it was 0-1 product and we came up with 2 innovative solutions which was not prevalent in the market then. This acted as the base platform for all other top up products launched in PayPal further.3. India Cross border business ramp down – RBI wanted PayPal to shut down the PayPal Xborder business so I was asked to shut down seamlessly with less impact to merchants and consumers, this very difficult task was completed on September 20114. India Cross border Re-entry – While RBI asked us to shut down they partnered with PayPal and our sponsor bank Citibank to come up with OPGSP guideline which is acting as the base for all cross border fintech companies that emerged after 2011. I played the technical product manager lead for this whole initiative. I felt a sense of pride in this. 5. India Cross borer business re-launch – period where I learnt and contributed not only on technical product side but also on the treasury pieces, nostro/vostro settlements, reserves management6. Partner management – A skill and role which I carried forward from Goldman days, for 2, 3, 4, 5 I was the relationship manager for bank product with DBS, Citibank and RBI (through Citi)While the base location was Chennai I was constantly traveling to Singapore and Mumbai during these 2.5 years
