I am a freelance features writer, recently converted to investigative journalism. Currently, I am a Milena Jesenska Fellow at the Institute for Human Sciences in Vienna, Austria.Between August 2014 and June 2015, I was a Hubert H. Humphrey Fellow at Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication (Arizona State University). During my Humphrey year, I examined funding models for investigative journalism across the U.S. in order to adopt similar solutions in my home country. For five years, until mid-2011, I was special correspondent for Evenimentul zilei, one of the main Romanian newspapers. During my work there, I covered mainly social subjects usually labeled as marginal by mainstream media. For one of my stories, I was awarded the best feature writing in 2011 by the Romanian Press Club. In January 2012, I won the 'European Reporter 2011', competition organized by The Representation of the European Commission and the European Parliament Information Office in Romania. In December 2011, I became a member of The Romanian Centre for Investigative Journalism. After a nine months experience as an editor for the Romanian portal of Yahoo! News Romania, I started a freelance career. My stories have been published by media outlets such as USA Today, Bloomberg BNA and Dilema Veche. Between January and March 2013, I worked as a reporter-in-residence with The New England Center for Investigative Reporting (NECIR) in Boston. The Balkan Fellowship for Journalistic Excellence (BFJE), awarded by The Balkan Investigative Reporting Network (BIRN), was the perfect continuation of this learning experience. The resulting article, published by New Statesman (UK), Suddeutsche Zeitung (DE), Standard (AU), Balkan Insight (SB), Vreme (SB) or Casa Jurnalistului (RO), won the first prize of BFJE 2013.

MemberThe Romanian Centre For Investigative Journalism Jan 2011 - PresentBucharestThe Romanian Centre for Investigative Journalism exists since 2001. We are among the founders and members of the Global Investigative Journalism Network (www.globalinvestigativejournalism.org). Our main goal is to enhance the quality of the Romanian investigative journalism. For the last years, we worked to consolidate in Romania a center for investigative journalism, independent from local financing resources. Recently we expanded our national network opening 10 local investigative desks, in 10 of the main cities in Romania . We have also built a strong network of contacts at regional level, participating in many cross-border investigative projects. We provide resources for journalists and students interested in our field of work. Four of our members are involved in training activities for both students and journalists, within Romania and in the region. RCIJ Legal Department is dealing with the legal screening of our published stories and is providing free legal consultancy for RCIJ members. Our Photo Department provides the visual support for our investigative stories and develops independent projects.

MemberAssociated Reporters Abroad (Ara) Jan 2012 - PresentBerlin Area, GermanyAssociated Reporters Abroad (ARA) is a Berlin-based news organization taking a fresh approach to delivering foreign news. With more than 100 seasoned reporters across Europe, the Middle East, North Africa, Asia and Australasia, we work as a team to help news outlets in the US, Europe and Australia – coping with shrinking budgets and shuttered foreign bureaus – expand their news coverage by using journalists already on location. While the news wires do an admirable job, with our journalists on the ground, we can go further, and more cost-effectively than sending a correspondent from abroad. And because reporters live and work locally, they are connected, speak the local language and can provide more context. We are not brokers, agents or aggregators, we are a team of journalists, a bureau abroad. Milena Jesenska FellowInstitut Für Die Wissenschaften Vom Menschen Oct 2015 - Dec 2015Vienna, AustriaLand ownership is causing patriotic tremors in Eastern Europe. Selling land to foreigners continues to be a highly disputed topic, ever since the negotiations on the EU accession treaties. This project will study the relationship between citizenship and land ownership. Is it related to the collectivization dramas of the 1950s or to an even more distant past? Does it create a new and rather silent division between East and West? (http://www.iwm.at/the-institute/visiting-fellows/vlad-odobescu/)
