Through the Urban Resilience Research Network, I collaborated with the City of Barcelona to establish indicators and prioritize actions that synergize adaptation and mitigation benefits to guide policy following their Declaration of Climate Emergency. I co-authored a research paper analyzing pandemic policies and public space interventions, and their relationship to climate resilience planning, to be published in Sustainability, 2022. The work placement component of my degree with RESCITIES centered on Barcelona’s community sustainability initiatives, Superblock projects, and Urban Mobility Strategy, involving research, data collection and analysis, GIS mapping, flood risk assessment, graphic design, and Spanish to English translations of publications.

Upon promotion to Operations Manager, I assumed grant writing responsibility, securing $125,000 in a fiscal year, and database management, including memberships, corporate sponsorships, donations, expenses, and program monitoring and evaluation. I coordinated all event logistics, including a black-tie event that raised $100,000 in silent and live auctions. I spoke on our local Spanish-language radio and news stations to promote this event. I maintained duties of Program Coordinator.

As Program Coordinator for Latin Americans Working for Achievement (LAWA), an educational nonprofit in Charlotte, I spearheaded program development, doubling our public-school partnerships, and expanding our Elementary ESL (English as a Second Language) tutoring program to offer courses for parents to better understand the American education system. I recruited and trained over 70 weekly tutors, in addition to short-term volunteers for events. I redesigned the website and brought the Scholarship application online for the first time. I designed all marketing materials such as social media posts, invitations, press releases, and weekly newsletters. I created monthly board meeting presentations including meeting agenda, programmatic data, and budget adherence. I coordinated and attended countless community outreach events, some of which were simply cultural celebrations, while others were critical for sharing information and providing community resources.

Ollantaytambo, Peru

During my Sustainable Tourism internship with Awamaki, a nonprofit in the Sacred Valley of Peru, I led half-day and three-day excursions through the rural Andean mountains. These tours aimed to empower the women of indigenous Quechua communities by preserving and propagating the ancient art of weaving. I served as liaison among tourists, cooperative members, and the NGO, ensuring that cooperative members controlled their developmental trajectory and environmental impact, and that profits remained in their communities. I planned and coordinated workshops for the cooperative members in Spanish, accounting, and team-building. In addition, I had many administrative tasks such as scheduling tours and answering website emails. I also assisted the marketing team by designing flyers, promoting the organization around town, and taking photographs of tours, many of which are still used on the website.
