About Victoria Preston
I am an Assistant Professor of Engineering at Olin College and Guest Investigator at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. My research work focuses on building robotic tools to take scientifically useful actions in extreme environments (like the deep sea, coral reefs, or coastal estuaries) to improve our collective understanding of and interaction with nature. My teaching centers on creating authentic, problem-driven, interactive projects that foster both skill mastery and critical contemplation on the definitions of "robots" and "intelligence."Prior to my current role, I was a postdoctoral researcher at Northeastern University in the Field Robotics Laboratory. I earned my PhD in Autonomous Systems in the MIT-WHOI Joint Program with a focus on the development of intelligent regimes for smart, often robotic, ocean instrumentation. My work was funded by a Martin Fellowship for Sustainability, and I am a 2017 National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate (NDSEG) Fellow. Prior to starting my degree, I graduated from Olin College of Engineering with a B.S. in Robotic Systems, worked for a handful of companies including Uber ATC and Ivani LLC, and spent a year as a Fulbright Student Researcher in Tallinn, Estonia working on autonomous underwater robotics at the Centre for Biorobotics.Feel free to get in touch with me!
Listed skills include Matlab, Analysis, Teaching, Technical Writing, and 15 others.

Postdoctoral Investigator
As a postdoctoral investigator I worked on research that advances the state of the art in probabilistic representations of hydrothermal plumes in deep ocean environments that assist with human and robotic decision-making.
Postdoctoral Researcher
I am a Future Faculty Postdoc Fellow at Northeastern University researching methods by which robots can support complex and dynamic sampling tasks in natural environments. With an applied focus on supporting biogeochemical science in marine environments, my algorithmic work highlights the complexity of sampling and modeling spatiotemporal distributions in order to assist in real-time decision-making by autonomous agents and their human teammates.
Graduate Student
A graduate researcher in the MIT-WHOI (Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution) Joint Program, in the departments of Applied Ocean Physics and Engineering, and Aeronautics and Astronautics Engineering. My doctoral thesis, "Perceive, Predict, and Plan: Robotic Expeditionary Science in Oceanic Spatiotemporal Fields," was defended in Dec 2022.
Student Grantee: Researcher
The Fulbright Program funded my work at the Centre for Biorobotics, located with the Tallinn University of Technology campus. There, I worked on control and autonomy of a low-cost biomimetic underwater vehicle, the U-CAT, which uses turtle-like fin propulsion to investigate marine archaeological sites. My work focused primarily on autonomous strategies for unknown, enclosed, space exploration.
Software Engineering Intern
I work on "advanced technologies" AKA mapping, safety, and autonomy on behalf of Uber.
Robotics Lab Affiliate And Researcher
Autonomous and remote control vehicle researcher, primary focus is electrical and computing systems. Thus far, two publications and one patent (pending) for the SnotBot project. Links to full publications coming soon.
Curriculum Design Assistant
Developing 'Regional Analysis in Development' a class offered at Olin College which develops quantitative skills of students (data handling and analysis) with a particular focus in data on developing countries and sectors. Responsible for developing course outlines and infrastructure (like websites, assignment descriptions, etc).
Course Assistant
Course Assistant for:- Modeling and Controls - basic circuitry and advanced electrical system analysis- Mechanics - introductory physics class- Regional Analysis in Development - probability and statistics meets data science meets development- Principles of Engineering - major project class- Controls - a higher level engineering class about electro-mechanical systems
Residential Resource
Member of the Office of Student Life staffing, dormitory residential resource for emotional, physical, and mental support for students.
Education Researcher
In order to prepare for the upcoming curriculum review, I have been tasked with analyzing the last ten years of Olin history, assessing how we came to this point, and offer suggestions for the future. My job entails sifting through old records, interviewing with faculty on campus, and developing methods by which to communicate the results.
Summer Intern
I was a member on two projects during the course of the summer - one was a product design project, and the other was seated more within a firmware/software technical context. During my internship I had the fortune of working with several mentors and team members that were experts in their fields which gave me the opportunity to learn. Results of internship was patent number 15/084,002.
Dept. Of Public Works, Bureau Of Engineering Intern
Worked to collect information about, and design an algae biofuel 'farm' system to interface with wastewater treatment sites in the county.
Guidance Department Intern
