GEAR UP is a federally funded program that encourages families of low income students to learn about the opportunities of pursuing a post secondary education for their children. As a parent outreach coordinator I assist guardians and parents establish a better rapport between families and our schools. Some duties include, but not limited to, telephone calls home to advice of upcoming events, interpreting at meetings for Spanish speaking families, facilitating informational meetings like financial aid nights. As an educational advisor, I assist students in creating a plan to continue their post secondary education. Services include teaching about scholarships, grants and other financial aid venues. I will also facilitate for students to seek and utilize other services like SAT, Accuplacer and/or ACT tutoring. For other duties, I work with data entry of all surveys and questionnaires gathered from our participants to assist us in better service our students. After school, I'm a facilitator at a tutoring center for low income students ages 6-14 at a city housing development in New Bedford where they have access to computers, high speed internet and other educational resources which otherwise they will not have access to. The GEAR UP program at Normandin Middle School was established to create early awareness for our middle school students to consider a post secondary education plan. I organized events like PTA meetings, The Multicultural Event, Talent Show for students, Book fairs, sport tournaments, etc. to promote the availability of our services for all our students.
