It's been more than ten years since I started out in the magazine world – and what a whirlwind it's been. I've tackled both custom and consumer titles, worked alongside some exceptionally talented editorial minds, and written quite a few interesting stories along the way. Interviews include one with a world-famous author (who told me that his inspiration came from heaven and writing cannot be taught) to another with a photographer about his project on brothel workers across Nevada (he stayed in said establishments and said the workers were very 'motherly' towards him). So never a dull moment. Now I'm in the freelance arena. My recent projects are varied from being the editor on Pam Golding Properties Imagine magazine – a beautiful glossy with a focus on luxury lifestyle and property with a circ of 30 000 – to creating website copy for the SABR (the South African Breast Milk Reserve), copywriting for a shipping agency and blogging for babygroup.co.za. I'm also a keen writer. I've written about decor, travel, fashion, beauty and lifestyle as well as juicier human interest pieces. Assisting the editor in managing the editorial team and sharing her vision of editorial excellence for the magazine, from the initial concepts to the final sign off of pages. Stands in for the editor when required.Key Responsibilities:• Brainstorm features ideas along with the features assistant and copy editor for the bi-monthly synopsis meeting• Plan direction of features (for the magazine’s three pillars: fashion, beauty and lifestyle) to fit in with the different themes every month and meeting the set budgets• Commission relevant features to network of freelancers• Create content for regular pages and write features when necessary• Work closely with all members of the team, especially the copy editor, features assistant, beauty editor, managing editor and art director• Edit and re-write text where required• Mentor features assistant• Compile booklists and oversee flatplan• Pay close attention to the details of the editorial content, ensuring it’s true to house style, and be part of the final read process with the dummy book• Liaise with the client’s publication manager on direction of monthly benefits and travel pages• Stand in for editor when she is absent/on leave• Contribute towards editorial decisions as part of the senior management team and assist with the smooth running of production• Travel to Johannesburg for laydown meetings with client every two months
