Ph.D. Studentship supervised by Prof. Robert J. Harvey (UCL) and Dr. Maya Topf (Birkbeck). Thesis title: Molecular insights into pathogenic mechanisms in startle disease. Submission: Sept 2012, viva passed on 8th Nov 2012.• Identified causative mutations by sequencing candidate genes involved in startle disease in various species using molecular biology techniques including PCR, cloning, DNA sequencing, as well as RFLP and use of the LightScanner instrument and accompanying software.• Prepared wild-type and mutant DNA constructs by site-directed mutagenesis and plasmid preparation techniques.• Built homology models of the glycine receptor and GlyT2 transporter protein using MODELLER software and also various servers for accurate fold prediction and sequence alignments.• Analysed the structural effects of amino acid substitutions as a result of mutations, with particular interest in the glycine receptor and transporters.• Responsible for writing and editing manuscripts before submission.In addition to my PhD studies, I was involved in teaching and demonstrating in lab practical classes for the undergraduate Pharmacy students in modules such as Biochemistry, Cardiology and pharmaceutical case studies. I also marked coursework from these students.

Integral part of a team supporting a number of large ongoing projects.Developing microbiological standard material for our Candida and bacterial vaginosis (BV/Candida) infection test through organism culture, optimising conditions for their long term storage and normalising their antigen or enzyme activity in order to produce consistent quality control standards.Culturing large panels of cross-reactant organisms for testing in the BV/Candida product and Streptococcus throat test.Communicating my research findings competently through written reports, presentations and team discussions.Creation and implementation of documentation to contribute to the new quality management system recently introduced to SPD leading to their achievement of gaining ISO 13485:2003 accreditation. Responsible for training of new staff in Category II Health and Safety within the labs.

Here I worked on the new biomarkers project for acute cardiac disease. Gaining significant experience and confidence in ELISA techniques, as my main work involved the selection and optimisation of antibodies and the development of assay sensitivity. I also carried out a range of other analytical techniques including dot blots, SDS-PAGE, western blotting, antibody conjugation and HPLC.In this role, I was also responsible for organising the recruitment of in-house blood donors and the collection and preparation of bloods for analysis.

Various administrative duties including typing letters to clients from dictation, filing and organising the post. I was also required to take and make calls to clients, other solicitors, estate agents and banks, of which I dealt with and logged appropriately.

I worked at this pub/restaurant for many years part-time. Serving food, helping with food preparation in the kitchen, serving drinks in the bar and handling cash.I became a very well trusted and efficient employee, and excelled in customer service.
