My graduate research in Dr. Molly Megraw's laboratory has two main foci: 1) investigation of the transcription factors required for gene expression using Arabidopsis thaliana as a model with an eye towards the development of a tunable promoter and 2) characterization of the transcriptional regulatory network responsible for monoterpene indole alkaloid biosynthesis in Catharanthus roseus with the intention of applying the process to other, less well-known medicinal plants.Other projects have included work on salt-stress tolerance in tomato cultivars and biological pathway curation.

Dr. Alemu Mengistu's soybean pathology laboratory focuses on determining resistance levels to three major pathogens: Macrophomina phaseolina, Cercospora sojina, and Phomopsis longicolla. My projects involved M. phaseolina--namely developing a protocol for determining the susceptability of different soybean varieties to charcoal rot and the effect of planting date on infection, although I assisted with the other projects in the lab.
