Scientist Ii
I engineer microbes (primarily yeasts) to produce terpene-based compounds for flavors, and fragrances, and nutraceuticals.
Graduate Research Assistant
My graduate research in Dr. Molly Megraw's laboratory has two main foci: 1) investigation of the transcription factors required for gene expression using Arabidopsis thaliana as a model with an eye towards the development of a tunable promoter and 2) characterization of the transcriptional regulatory network responsible for monoterpene indole alkaloid biosynthesis in Catharanthus roseus with the intention of applying the process to other, less well-known medicinal plants.Other projects have included work on salt-stress tolerance in tomato cultivars and biological pathway curation.
Biological Science Technician
Dr. Alemu Mengistu's soybean pathology laboratory focuses on determining resistance levels to three major pathogens: Macrophomina phaseolina, Cercospora sojina, and Phomopsis longicolla. My projects involved M. phaseolina--namely developing a protocol for determining the susceptability of different soybean varieties to charcoal rot and the effect of planting date on infection, although I assisted with the other projects in the lab.
Laboratory Technician
Under Dr. Valerian Dolja, this lab focuses on elucidating the mechanism behind intracellular vesicular transport by myosin motors. Using the model system Arabidopsis thaliana, I participated in the research effort by performing genotypic and phenotypic screens. My duties included but were not limited to DNA extraction, PCR reactions, fluorescent microscopy, and bacterial transformation.
Laboratory Assistant
Under Dr. Jan Dvorak, research focused on locating and mapping the Tg (tenacious glume) gene in A. tauschii. I participated in this research by sequencing and analyzing single nucleotide polymorphisms in microsatellite sequences. My duties also included Southern blotting and PCR.
Undergraduate Teaching Assistant
Co-lead discussion sections of 30 students for an undergraduate honors seminar.
