I pre-tested patients by administering autorefraction and visual field tests before their exams, pretesting approximately 6 patients per shift. After pre-testing patients, I shadowed their exams, observing how the optometrist conducted comprehensive exams and treated patients with vision problems. I also called patients for glasses pick up and exam rescheduling, and I maintained organization in the office by sorting and storing files and patient charts.

As an intern, I worked at the front desk checking in patients for their exams and answering phone calls. I got to experience quickly adapting to working in a fast-paced, unfamiliar environment. I also reviewed patients’ glasses for dispensing and notified patients to pick them up.

The UC Davis CalTeach/Mathematics and Science Teaching Program is a program that provides undergraduate students with opportunities to gain experience in science and mathematics education. The program hosts classes and internships to develop teaching skills that can be applied to students from kindergarten through university classes. As a learning assistant for an introductory biology course at UC Davis, I attended weekly hour-long meetings and worked with teaching assistants to teach weekly three-hour long labs in introductory biodiversity and the Tree of Life. In the labs, I improved student performance by guiding students through hands-on activities, answering their questions, and surveying their understanding of the class material.
