Part of the DoD-funded project "Materials in Extreme Dynamic Environments", my work focused on investigating copper and magnesium alloys deforming at high rates for military applications. Using the Dynamic Transmission Electron Microscope (DTEM) at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, CA, I studied nucleation, motion, and interaction of crystal defects (dislocation and twins) with the microstructure at micro and nano-scales during in-situ high rate straining experiments.

During my PhD, I used spark plasma sintering (SPS) to process near-net shape turbine blades in titanium aluminides for jet engines. I used CAD and FEM to design the tools to form high density parts. I investigated densification mechanisms and the influence of the blade geometry on porosity and stress distribution. I was able to successfully form two types of near-net shape turbine blade, one for the colder stage of a jet engine turbine, one for the hotter part of a helicopter turbine. Process and results were patented.The main focus of my PhD was on the development of titanium-aluminum (TiAl) alloys processed by SPS with the goal of optimizing microstructure and chemical composition to improve mechanical properties at room and high temperature. I performed tensile and creep tests, and electron microscopy (SEM and TEM). To better investigate deformation mechanisms, I used in-situ straining TEM experiments. The optimized as-SPSed material was also the subject of a patent.
