I am heading a project that will provide assistance to female, incarcerated women, and help them successfully transition back to their families, children, and communities. We provide special assistance helping these women process past histories of trauma as well as assisting those with children parent more effectively.

I served as the executive director of Healthy Start, Inc. in Pittsburgh, PA. This nonprofit organization's mission is to focus primarily on the reduction of infant mortality and low birth weight babies in Southwestern Pennsylvania. Services were designed to improve the quality of life for infants, toddlers, youths, siblings, parents, and grandparents. While there I increased client census by 60%, served on national, federal committees to design national service models, and implemented an innovative, breastfeeding support service for new mothers.

I served as the Coordinator of the Incarcerated Women's Project for the Clara Bell Duvall division of the ACLU of Pennsylvania. The project seeks to improve access to reproductive health care for imprisoned women in the State of Pennsylvania.

I assisted Citizen Power, Inc. an environmental advocacy nonprofit with fundraising. The mission of Citizen Power is to help the public to find access to sources of renewable energy as well as advocate for public policies that help families and individuals find reasonably priced and comprehensive health insurance.

I assisted Amachi Pittsburgh with programming and fundraising in its services geared to the children of the incarcerated.

I coordinated a statewide advocacy effort to raise awareness about the dangers to children's health from firearms which are not safely stored. We interfaced with the medical and legal communities in order to persuade adults to help protect children from injury and death from firearms.

Responsible for board relations, supervision of staff, fundraising and grant writing, program research and development, budgeting, administrative functions, and special events. Developed new programs in the Allegheny County Jail which served pregnant inmates and their infants, and a project in the CYF system which provided family reunification services for court dependent children whose mothers had criminal histories. Also led a successful advocacy effort which ended the shackling of pregnant inmates as they delivered their babies in Allegheny County. Was responsible for organizing a 90 member community planning collaborative which designed the Gwendolyn J. Campbell Elliott Family Activity Center at the Allegheny County Jail. The Center comforts and prepares children as they wait to visit their incarcerated loved ones and provides human services referrals to the families of the imprisoned. Also helped to coordinate a regional advocacy effort devoted to improving the experiences of the children of the incarcerated.

From its inception in 1995, served as Coordinator and single professional staff member of this advocacy organization devoted to the needs of at-risk children, especially those in the child welfare system. Child Watch began as a project at The Children's Home of Pittsburgh, and then became independent. As Coordinator, I recruited and developed a coalition of over 260 individuals and over 90 regional organizations who collaborated to mobilize community leaders and local media to address and solve the problems of at-risk children. Responsible for fiscal management, contract administration, grant and proposal writing, conference and event planning, evaluation analysis, media interface, interagency collaborative work, planning and carrying out of advocacy initiatives, and supervision of employees. During my tenure, Child Watch initiated an innovative series of experiential, on-site tours that inspired Allegheny County community leaders to build a new Juvenile Court and convinced nine local foundations to fund a new legal hearing officer program at this court.

Responsible for development and implementation of marketing and outreach initiatives to women with troubled pregnancies, an effort that resulted in a doubling of the number of clients seen. Designed brochures, created TV and radio commercials, designed a curriculum for high school students, planned and coordinated professional conferences, wrote numerous successful grants and proposals and conducted outreach visits to referral sources.

Project Officer for this regional health organization. Performed contract budgeting and program monitoring for a 49 site family planning clinic system spanning 23 counties, wrote grants and proposals, administered WIC (pregnant women and children’s nutrition program) and EPSDT (children’s Medicaid program), evaluated medical services, conducted marketing studies, and designed and collected social and epidemiological data.

Responsibilities included placement and supervision of children for adoption, preparation of court cases, and counseling of children, adoptive parents and birthparents.
