Research topic: High-capacity optical long-haul transmission systemsThe research topics covered are the following. First 40-Gb/s coherent modulation formats, 100-Gb/s dual-polarization QPSK modulation and 400-Gb/s dual-carrier, dual-polarization 16QAM modulation over solid core single-mode fiber were subject of investigation. During the second year I became involved in the MODE-GAP project and made the switch to multi-mode transmission systems.3-mode transmission over solid core few-mode fiber and 19-cell & 37-cell photonic band gap fiber was investigated. Large transmitted capacities were achieved, reaching up to 73.7 Tb/s, using wavelength-division and mode-division multiplexed transmission of QPSK, 8QAM, 16QAM and 32QAM by using self-developed MIMO-DSP. In the last year long distance transmission (>1000 km) over few-mode fiber was accomplished by employing a self-proposed re-circulating loop setup using 3 modes carrying 128-Gb/s DP-QPSK modulated data. Possible integration of few-mode fiber technology into currently deployed single-mode transmission systems was successfully demonstrated during a field trial.My research resulted in 4 invited talks at international conferences, more than 60 papers in major journals and international conferences of high reputation, a white paper, 3 press releases by Coriant, a Guinness World record, 2 prizes and 1 nomination.

43-Gb/s POLMUX-RZ-DPSK vs. 43-Gb/s POLMUX-RZ-DQPSK for the use in long-haul transmission systemsThe suitability of 43-Gb/s POLMUX-RZ-DPSK and POLMUX-RZ-DQPSK modulation for long-haul optical transmission was compared. I demonstrated both by simulations and experimentally that the higher robustness against nonlinear impairments of 43-Gb/s POLMUX-RZ-DPSK allows for a ~40% increase in feasible transmission distance compared to 43-Gb/s POLMUX-RZ-DQPSK.
