About Vince Smith
I am a Research Leader in Informatics and Head of Digital Data and Informatics at the Natural History Museum (NHM), London. I've been based at the NHM since 2006 and have led the Museum's digital science function in various guises since 2012. As Head of Digital, Data and Informatics (DDI), I look after a team of 40+ data scientists and engineers, looking after the digitisation of our collections, the associated data management and various informatics tasks associated with NHM research, including management of our Data Portal, and our Artificial Intelligence (AI) team. In this capacity, I also head up a series of national and international consortia focused on the digitisation, development and use of natural science collections data, including the UK's Distributed System of Scientific Collections (DiSSCo UK), the EC-funded SYNTHESYS programme and support the UK node of the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF). I am also the editor-in-chief of the Biodiversity Data Journal, one of the world's largest and most innovative data journals. I'm a fairly infrequent user of LinkedIn, but my ORCID profile (https://orcid.org/0000-0001-5297-7452) gives more up-to-date information on my latest work.

Co-developed the Biodiversity Inventory Tracking System “BioCorder” (www.biocorder.org/) with collaborators at the University of Florida, Louisiana State University and University of Glasgow. This is a Lab Management System to facilitate the tracking of specimens and associated molecular data by collaborators at these institutions. This work was conducted as part of my research program on the phylogeny and systematics of parasitic lice (Insecta: Phthiraptera).

Studied the constraints on pathogen exchange using parasitic lice as a simplified system to model disease transmission. These data were used to improve models reconstructing host-parasite relationships and help understand host evolutionary history.
