Engineering Intern
CurrentPublic Works Engineering, City of Sammamish, WashingtonTasks: Perform inventory to all compliant and non-compliant sidewalks, curbs and girders, and curb ramps in the city, collect data using GIS system and maps, summarize results in formal reports, communicate with the contractor, and prepare daily reports for Sammamish Landing parking and pedestrian access improvements project. I have been helping out Jed Ireland – senior engineer on daily inspections for Sammamish Landing – parking and pedestrian access improvements project in city of Sammamish since September, 2014. My main duties are keeping track of work flow and material use, observe the construction and procedure, taking notes on any concerns and important conversations, and drafting daily inspection reports. Working on the project has given me a lot of experiences on different engineering aspects. Through this project, I have seen and learnt about reading design plans, surveying, installing retaining walls with I-beam piles and tie backs, backfilling procedure, dealing with removing and replacing sewer, water, gas service lines, storm drainage system, soil condition, foundation, design change, cost estimates, and other important aspects. I have also seen and experienced customer complaints and concerns throughout the project. However, Jed has been a great mentor who is good at explaining and guiding me on how to solve problems and working with the customers. It has been a good practice for me in term of writing important daily reports under Jed’s supervision. Goal: Meet the ADA compliant requirements for accessibility in residential and commercial areas
