Senior Data ArchitectAmazon Web Services (Aws) Apr 2019 - PresentSeattle, Wa, UsDesign and implement scalable big data architectures for the most strategic and largest customers on the AWS platform using a range of analytics services (S3, EMR, Redshift, Lake Formation, Athena, Glue, QuickSight) and 3rd party software (Apache Ranger, Databricks). Some significant projects I worked on:Implemented a data authorization solution for Spark, Hive, and EMRFS using Apache Ranger and Amazon EMR for one of the largest customer on AWS. The solution included deploying Apache Ranger on Kubernetes containers, a PostgreSQL database on Amazon RDS, and a Windows Active Directory on EC2. EMR clusters were configured to communicate with the Ranger Admin Server via plugins and certificates stored in AWS Secrets Manager.Successfully led a team of 20+ data architects and engineers in developing a cloud data platform for Amazon Advertising using AWS serverless analytics services and the Serverless Data Lake Framework. Provided technical guidance, managed the project using Scrum methodology, and worked with senior leadership to define project scope, prioritize tasks, plan resources, and mitigate risks. Mentored junior team members and contributed to the promotion of four team members. Achieved exceptional customer satisfaction, leading to the renewal of a professional services contract worth over $8 million. As a member of a highly skilled central data lake team, I contributed to the development, deployment, and management of a 22 PB data lake for a leading financial software company. The data lake was built on S3. EMR was used as the primary big data processing engine and Databricks was used as secondary. Ad hoc SQL queries were enabled using Athena. Redshift was used for data warehousing while Redshift Spectrum provided the capabilities to enable a Lake House architecture. In addition to these technologies, we also used Amazon SageMaker, AWS Service Catalog, Jira, Tidal, Jenkins, Terraform, Git, and GitHub Enterprise to manage and operate the data lake. -

Senior Consultant, Microsoft Consulting ServicesMicrosoft Jun 2005 - Nov 2011Redmond, Washington, UsI had the opportunity to work on several exciting projects as part of Microsoft's Public Sector team, helping customers solve their most challenging problems by delivering custom software solutions on the Microsoft platform. One project I worked on was the design and implementation of a Business Intelligence solution for Tacoma Public School District. This solution allowed the district to quickly identify at-risk students by analyzing attendance, disciplinary, and grade data for all 30,000 students.Another project I led was the technical implementation of the Student Information System for Fresno Unified School District. This system was used by district personnel to manage attendance, behavior, enrollment, grades, and scheduling for over 75,000 students. We used a variety of technologies, including SharePoint 2010, ASP.NET, and SQL Server 2008, to build this system.I also worked on the migration and performance enhancement of Washington State's Vehicle Field System. This system was responsible for processing over 7 million title and registration transactions per year and collecting over $1 billion in revenue per biennium. Initially, it ran on .NET 1.1 and SQL Server 2000, but we migrated it to .NET 3.5 and SQL Server 2005 to improve its performance.I also oversaw the architecture and implementation of a custom archival system for The Washington State Digital Archive. This system was designed to ingest unstructured data from state and local agencies, process and store it in a centralized repository, and make all digital archives searchable and accessible via a web interface. The initial size of the data was about 13 TB, and was expected to grow to 200 TB within 5 years of go-live. We used technologies such as .NET, Windows Workflow, and SQL Server 2005 to build this solution. -
