Oversaw vessel refit. Partnered with leadership, legal, HR to recruit senior ops managers, captains. Started to develop research program.

With no background in marine engineering or ocean sciences, I had to learn fast to write full specs and oversee the refit of two globally capable ships into hi-tech research vessels, including sensors, instruments, labs, comms, cranes, etc. Lone Ranger has since been decommissioned due to old age, and Falkor is still considered one of the best in its class research ships.

This was fun! I had a chance to set up a new ocean technology R&D program with focus on scalable survey product development, invite proposals, run technical reviews, and help select the best innovators to support via R&D contracts. I'm humbled to see the incredible successes of Saildrone and OpenROV that stemmed from this program. Check out their iOS and Android apps!

Working with 2 other amazing R&D engineers, we designed a unique electrical power conversion system for a prototype airborne wind power plant. We developed a compact high voltage BLDC motor-generator, power electronics, controller, and successfully commissioned the system under severe scheduling and resource constraints. Loved collaborating with several PhD's at MIT and Harvard on DARPA Programmable Matter. We proved at least 2 types of polyhedral chains that fold into arbitrary 3D shapes, and secured DARPA funding (SageMath / Blender / Git / Matlab)

I designed high power multi-phase induction motors, real-time controllers (PID, stability analysis, lead-lag compensation, pole placement, state observer, continuous and discrete-time), and drives for low vibration and noise using structural and parametric optimization and comprehensive mathematical modeling (MathCAD / Matlab / Simulink / Multisim / Electronics Workbench).

I installed, commissioned, diagnosed, and repaired mobile crane safety electronics, such as crane overload protection systems, on-board recorders (black boxes), power line proximity alarms, etc.

Setup facilities and procedures for the diagnosis and repair of electronic vehicle engine controllers (ECU/ECM). Installed, diagnosed, and repaired controllers, sensors, antitheft equipment, audio, and various other peripherals.

Analyzed pipe manufacturing line operation and wrote PLC programming and operating manuals for the continuous pipe feeder and flying saw machines, production line components.
