This position: Assists the Roads, Trails and Resources Engineering Geologist in evaluating roads and trails and the re-engineering or re-routing of native, gravel base, or paved roads and trails and the management of projects designed to maintain and rehabilitate watershed stability and ecosystem function. Performs geological and hydrological investigations to develop plans and specifications for site-specific slope stability and reducing sedimentation problems. Designs erosion control treatments and landform restoration projects.Ensures that the terms, conditions and legal requirements of various permits are adhered to by contractors and California State Parks Employees on the job site.Typical activities include:Performing pre-field investigations or preliminary site assessmentsSurveying with laser based and electronic instrumentationField mappingDetailing specific treatment prescriptionsConducting pre-treatment photo surveys (photo stations)Preparing project plans and maps for heavy equipment contractsCoordinating heavy equipment contracts and serving as the State’s on-site representative during constructionCoordinating in-house heavy equipment operationsConducting post-treatment photo surveysPreparing final project analysis and technical reports including recommendations for further treatment, monitoring, or mitigation, this includes evaluating construction problems related to landslides, drainage, seismicity, coastal and fluvial erosion, and flooding

This position performs a variety of semi skilled labor tasks related to the design, construction and maintenance of trails in California State ParksTypical activities included:Trail layout, design, and maintenanceConstruction of trails including the construction and/or installation of: trail tread, drainage structures, retaining walls, safety railing, bridges, drain lenses, turnpikes, multi-tier rock walls, culverts, etc.Brushing Utilizing griphoists and chainsaws to remove down redwoods

This position performs a variety of restoration related work in partnership with various federal, state and local agencies in Nevada and Eastern California.Typical activities included:Construction and maintenance of barbed wire fencing, at times historic and requiring careful preservation, with a focus on riparian zones and stream crossings. This fencing served to separate grazing land from land intended for conservation (typically of Greater Sage Grouse). Seeding plants to aid post fire recovery in a sensitive wilderness area Application of herbicide to noxious weeds in sensitive wilderness areas Identifying and mapping invasive species in preparation for removal Driving four wheel drive vehicles on unmaintained dirt roads.
