Current research is focused on optimizing a metagenomic sequencing approach for clinical samples. This approach is able to identify and classify bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites without the need for culture-based methods of identification. The metagenomic approach can aid in diagnosing infectious diseases, detecting antimicrobial resistance genes, and monitoring microbial communities and clinical settings. The project focuses on evaluating existing methods for nucleic acid depletion and engineering a more efficient method. Sequencing is performed on the Oxford Nanopore platform, using control and clinical samples.This work is conducted under the supervision of Dr. Alabady in his lab in the Department of Plant Biology, as part of the CDC’s Pathogen Genomics Centers of Excellence Network.

Oversaw daily operations of six facilities and 75 employees. Duties included maintaining chemical balances and cleanliness, maintenance and repairs, maintaining inventories, supervising and training employees, and being the main point of contact for customers.

Shadowing and volunteering within Northside Hospital Cherokee’s Radiology, Cardiology, Labor and Delivery, Emergency Medicine, Nutritional, Respiratory, and General Nursing Departments.
