I'm an author / journalist / filmmaker who has been moving through the world since 1999, working in over 90 countries. I'm the author of Ghost Cities of China: The Story of Cities Without People in the World's Most Populated Country, which recounts the two and a half years I spent in China's sparsely populated new cities. My latest book is called On the New Silk Road, and is about the revival of the Silk Road as seen from the three years I spent traveling through China, East Asia, Central Asia, and Eastern Europe collecting stories for it. In 2019, I moved to New York City and started Real Life Cinema, a film production company that specializes in documentary features and shorts about under-reported topics, cultures, and people. I have been a guest on BBC World News 'Today,' BBC World 'Newshour,' NPR 'Morning Edition,' BBC World Storyville documentary, CNBC 'Squawk Box,' CBC 'The Current,' ABC News 'The World,' CCTV China 24, Vesti 24 (Russia), among others. I have also been featured in articles on VICE, Forbes.com, The Guardian, BBC World News, the New Statesman, the South China Morning Post, the China Daily, and many others. I'm also active in public speaking and have given talks at venues and events around the world, including the Center for Strategic International Studies (CSIS) in Washington, DC, the University of Michigan's Center for Chinese Studies, the INDEV conference at the University of Waterloo in Canada, Waterstones Piccadilly in London, The University of Lodz in Poland, the Royal Asiatic Society in Shanghai, and the Beijing International Literary Festival in Beijing, Chengdu, and Suzhou.
