Wellcome Trust Doctoral Candidate in Public Health Economics and Decision Science.

I joined the School of Health and Related Research (ScHARR) as a Research Assistant in Public Health Economic Modelling. My role involved collaborating with the Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) unit at Public Health England (PHE).My initial responsibilities included:• checking and developing R code, • reviewing evidence surrounding NCD modelling, • developing conceptual models, and• evaluating and reporting model results.On April 2022, this post evolved into an Honorary contract with the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC).

I joined the Non-Communicable Disease Modelling (NCD) Unit at the Office for Health Improvement and Disparities (OHID) as a part-time Public Health Economics modeller (Academic Honorary Contract), where I collaborated on the Strategic Public Health and Economic Resource Effectiveness (SPHERE) package and modelling platform.The SPHERE package - built using R - contains a set of functions which analysts can combine to estimate the health, economics and health-economics impacts of a range of prevention strategies. The SPHERE modelling platform is a set of modules implementing the SPHERE package. These modules fall into four components - evidence preparation, population synthesis, simulation and analysis - all highly data-driven and return their outcomes, insights and evidence.My responsibilities included:• authoring the SPHERE package cost-effectiveness functions,• creating the Economics module within the SPHERE modelling platform,• building the Economics module visualisations, and• incorporating the Economics module tabular and graphical outputs into the SPHERE, R Shiny, user interface.

Worked on:• Evaluating the impact of a community-based social prescribing intervention on people with type 2 diabetes in North East England.• The Dual Bronchodilators in Bronchiectasis Study (DIBS). A pragmatic, multicentre, placebo-controlled, 3-arm, double-blinded, randomised controlled trial.• Assessing the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of oral nutritional interventions in malnourished frail elderly people.

To overcome software limitations, I rebuilt and updated a patient-level model for advanced kidney failure. This project involved understanding the discrete event simulation that was built using Visual Basic for Applications (VBA), combined with an Excel front, before rebuilding it in R.
