About Sebastien Wagner

My academic background is based on a deep knowledge in Applied Mathematics and Numerical Modelling, Computer Programming, and Computational Physics. After my graduation as an Ingénieur at the Institut des Sciences de l’Ingénieur de Toulon-Var, I oriented my work experience towards the design and the implementation of industrial numerical algorithms dedicated to Environmental Engineering and Geophysics.I have been working on atmospheric processes since the year 2000. Thanks to my initial academic background, I was able to develop an expertise both in atmospheric modelling and remote sensing. I first joined the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre as a scientific officer within the Climate Change Unit where I worked for almost five years on air quality modelling. Since September 2004, I have been working at EUMETSAT, as a consultant in numerical algorithm development. I am currently in charge of developing and validating an aerosol product using the MSG/SEVIRI observations. This project benefits from the expertise I acquired as an atmospheric chemistry modeller, as I could make the link between the satellite products and their use by the modellers community. In parallel, I have initiated many interactions with potential users and with other scientific groups working on the retrieval of aerosol characteristics.Looking at the future, this project is foreseen to be part of the core developments for the Meteosat Third Generation Flexible Combined Imager Mission.Through my work experience I have acquired a solid experience in various fields of Earth Sciences and in particular in Atmospheric Sciences, together with a strong expertise in algorithm development in operational and industrial environments. This multifaceted expertise allowed me to bring people from different communities to work together and to create synergies. At last, my experience abroad, and in international environments enabled me to develop excellent communication and inter-personal skills.Specialties: Numerical code development, applied to environmental modelling and remote sensing. Mathematical inversion and optimization methods, applied to geosciences. Resolution of partial differential equations using discretization methods (finite elements, finite volumes, finite differences).UNIX/Linux environments, C, F90, IDL, Perl, parallel computing.

Sebastien Wagner Work Experience Details
  • Eumetsat
    Remote Sensing Scientist
    Eumetsat Jan 2012 - Present
    Eumetsat
In charge of the calibration and the monitoring of the reflective solar bands for the Meteosat imagers. This includes: lunar calibration, vicarious calibration using pseudo-invariant targets, inter-calibration (GSICS). For future missions such as Meteosat Third Generation, responsible for the development of the detection chain model for the FCI instrument to prepare the monitoring of the radiometric performances for the future imager. Active member of international working groups such as the GSICS (Global Space-based Inter-Calibration System) Research Working Group and CEOS WGCV IVOS. Lead the development of the GSICS Implementation of the ROLO model, the current international reference for lunar calibration.
  • Eumetsat
    Consultant (Self-Employed) In Instrument Calibration
    Eumetsat Jan 2011 - Dec 2011
    Eumetsat
  • Eumetsat
    Consultant (Self-Employed) In Algorithm Development
    Eumetsat Sep 2004 - Dec 2010
In charge of developing the Land Daily Aerosol Product (Day-2 products) for the Meteosat Second Generation platforms (currently METEOSAT 8 and METEOSAT 9) data, using optimal estimation. Also in charge of developing and maintaining various numerical codes (the in-house radiative transfer model RTMOM, the MSG image interpreter SPT, etc.).
  • European Commission - Dg Jrc - Institute For Environment And Sustainability (Ispra, Italy)
    Scientist And Numerical Modeller
European Commission - Dg Jrc - Institute For Environment And Sustainability (Ispra, Italy) Feb 2000 - Aug 2004
In the Climate Change / Emissions and Health Units, in charge of studying and developing methods of mesh embedding applied to the multiscale modelling of atmospheric processes. A multiscale air quality model dealing with gas chemistry and aerosol thermodynamics has been developed in order to couple regional scale with urban and local scales. The model has been applied to the ESCOMPTE area (Marseille - Etang de Berre). The formation and the destruction of tropospheric ozone was studied as well as the impact of anthropogenic emissions. The aim of such a work is to set abatement strategie to reduce emissions (European directive on ozone - Kyoto protocol). In the framework of a model co-development with the Climate Change Unit, I have been involved in the validation of an air quality model using optical thickness as a parameter to compare remote sensing data (retireved from MISR and MODIS instruments), AERONET data, and model results over the area of Milan and the Po Valley.
  • Hydraulic Research Wallingford (Wallingford, Uk)
