About Walker Ray

For 41 years, five months and 10 days, U.S. journalism had to put up with E. Ray Walker, first at the Lexington (Ky.) Herald-Leader, then The Virginian-Pilot in Norfolk, and for the last 27 years at Knight Ridder/Tribune News Service (now McClatchy-Tribune) in Washington. At KRT/MCT, he earned a reputation for building projects. As sports editor, Ray built the fledgling news service sports effort into a major national supplemental sports service. As news editor, he developed and launched two regional news services, KRT South and KRT California. And as deputy editor/projects, he built the op-ed service into the powerhouse it is today. Each weekday, editors at 450-plus client papers count on Ray to provide timely, incisive commentary on domestic and foreign affairs. For seven years Ray ran the news service’s highly touted internship program. In 2005, the assistant dean for development and alumni affairs at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill wrote: “Based on what I saw and heard, the KRT internship is the best opportunity in town because you take the time to work with students and make sure they experience everything the capital has to offer.”In addition to his work at MCT, Ray has edited four nonfiction books (“It Gets Dark Sometimes: My Sister’s Fight to Live and Save Lives” and “Season of Life” by Pulitzer Prize winner Jeffrey Marx; “Faces of the Civil War” by Ron Coddington; and “Mack and the Boys” by Malcolm L. Stallons. Ray also edited “The Eyes of History,” the annual awards book of the White House News Photographers’ Association, every year from 1998 to 2006.Each fall he helps teach a speechwriting class at George Washington University. For the last five years he has taught an op-ed writing class at a nationally known non-partisan think tank in Washington.Important: Ray is a cancer survivor and a multiple heart-attack survivor.
