I am responsible for the Estimating and Pre-Qualification Questionnaire information provided by the busy Surfacing Division. I also provide technical support and guidance to the Civil Engineering Estimating Department when pricing road construction schemes. Having made significant improvements to the quality of the Surfacing Division PQQ submissions I have recently been tasked with reviewing all PQQ submissions across all divisions. Employed on a Contract basis, I was initially engaged to provide specialist support in respect of the surfacing works as part of their bid for the £35m Transport Scotland A737 Dalry Bypass Project. This initial scope was extended to include the provision of support, advice and local knowledge to the estimating and procurement teams based in England. I was then retained by Interserve to provide support in a number of areas including • Health and Safety • Business development • Pre-qualification questionnaires • Tender evaluation • Programming • Procurement and commercial management in respect of ongoing and potential contracts.

I am the Estimator and Business Development Manager within the Contracts Division of the Hillhouse Quarry Group. I am responsible for the pricing of all tender enquiries received from our existing client base and developing further business opportunities with both new and potential clients. I have successfully secured works from a number of civil engineering contractors and local authorities who we had not previously contracted with. I have established and maintain a database of documents and responses for inclusion in and support of PQQ submissions. Prior to this there had been no formalised approach to responding to PQQ’s and as a result the completed questionnaires now regularly score top marks. The improved PQQ scores and performance has resulted in Hillhouse being awarded a number of Framework Contracts which we had previously been unsuccessful in gaining access to. These include the Ayrshire 2G Minor Works Framework, the Strathclyde Partnership for Transport Tarmac Repairs and Replacement Framework and the City Building (Glasgow) Minor Works Framework. I have also secured Approved Contractor Status with AMEC, Balfour Beatty, Chemring Group, Land Engineering, the NHS Golden Jubilee Trust, Inverclyde Council, North Lanarkshire Council and West Lothian Council. I have also registered Hillhouse Contracts on the Builder’s Profile database as well as gaining SSIP Accreditation for Hillhouse Contracts.In addition to the above I instigated and managed a complete overhaul of the Hillhouse Group website and now oversee its’ maintenance. I also identified a need to improve the quality of our marketing materials and managed the design and production of new business cards, brochures and banners in line with new company branding.

Between 2002 and 2009, my role as Cost Manager with Farrans involved me with all Scottish contracts. I was required to report on the commercial aspects of all projects to the Directors on a monthly basis. As part of this process I supervised and managed the internal and external cost reporting within the region which required the production and preparation of cost information including Activity Schedules, Expenditure Profiles, Cost Reports, Forecasts and Valuations. Between 2009 and 2011 I was involved in the pricing and negotiation of work with Farrans’ major client at the time, Scottish Water. This proved successful and in my final 12 months I secured a number of contracts worth a total of £33.4m. Scottish Water - DW5 - £18.1m Water Quality ProgrammeProgramme of works to improved water quality in over 650km of mains at various sizes (90mm dia to 700mm dia) by removal of iron and manganese deposits from existing pipework using a variety of techniques from flushing and swabbing to slip lining, epoxy lining, directional drilling and open cutting as part of Scottish Water Q&S IIIB programme.Port Edgar Long Sea Outfall - £1.7 Marine Outfall780m of 315mm dia HDPE outfall pipe within the Firth of Forth as part of an advance works package for the proposed New Forth Crossing. Pipe trenched on sea bed and retained in place using precast concrete mattresses and rock armour.

I was involved as a Site Agent or Section Engineer in a number of projects including:Troon Harbour - the construction of a new RO-RO facility including access ramps and linkspan complete with berthing dolphins which were constructed some 15m off shore.Dalmarnock to Daldowie Sludge Main - works included the piling of the River Clyde at several locations to allow the installation of sludge pipes below the riverbed.Moyle Interconnector - installation of 8.5km of twin cable in south west Scotland and Northern Ireland including 4nr marine trenches.Annan Sewerage Treatment Works - construction of aeration tanks within a sheet piled cofferdam and 300m of 850mm diameter outfall pipe across tidal merse.
