This role is a development of the Head of Technical Publications role, with the added responsibilities of establishing and maintaining a Technical Library in support of a new and expanding Maintenance Repair and Overhaul (MRO) workshop, in both Belfast and Dallas. This involved obtaining and making available the repair and overhaul documentation form various third party manufacturers and airlines. These are required to be kept up to date as each new release is published, and control and accuracy is audited as part of the MRO Certification.The second additional responsibility added was the development of the Airworthiness Limitations (AWL) inspections in support of the maintenance programme for the Bombardier Structural Components. This involved the establishment of a Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) capability within the department, recruiting and training a Level 2 NDT engineer and incorporating his skills into the Technical Publications capabilities.The responsibilities now also included researching cost saving activities, including a Business case for the outsourcing of some Technical Publications activities. I set up a strategic partnership with an off-shore Publications Service Provider, introducing this in 2017. This involved establishing contracts, data exchange mechanisms, workflow and quality checks. This initiative also required good change management skills, as this had a major impact on the traditional work model within the team.

Responsible as the Departmental Manager for a team of 22 including Technical Authors, Illustrators, In-Service Engineers and Administration Staff supporting the publications for major aircraft structural and power plant components on a variety of contracts along with supporting the in-service engineering queries for Shorts legacy aircraft. Responsibilities included the organisation and smooth running of the department; prioritising, scheduling and monitoring the work to ensure our commitments are met and comply with industry regulations, audits and customer standards. Also responsible for the recruitment of staff and their development through appropriate training and supervision, along with staff appraisal reviews. The role involved preparing annual budgets and revenue plans, and contributing to bids for new projects both at a company level and departmental level. As part of this role it was my responsibility to be aware of new developments and standards and continually seeking to improve our performance and quality with the introduction of new methods and applications. Continual improvement opportunities identified and implemented by applying the latest Business Improvement tools, such as 6 sigma, achieving Gold Standard for the department. I was responsible for the strategic development with advancements in electronic documentation and eBusiness. I represented Bombardier Belfast at Corporate level, along with Commercial and Business Aircraft Groups as part of the ePublications Strategic Leadership Team, implementing new technologies and specifications, such as ASD S1000D v4.0, and web publishing within each site.I also represented UK Aerospace Industry as a member of the European Aerospace, Space and Defence (ASD) Product Support Committee, responsible for collaboration across the Aerospace Industry in Europe in relation to improvements to the support of in-service aircraft.

Responsible for a team of six technical authors specialising in aircraft nacelle and power plant technical publications on a variety of contracts. My responsibilities included oversight of the team; prioritising, scheduling and monitoring the work to ensure our commitments are met. I was also the main point of contact between the management team and my authoring team, requiring regular status reports to be prepared and presented. I was also required to foresee potential problems and introduce corrective action or highlight the need for management to address concerns before they impact on performance. The role included liaising with other engineering and functional departments and customers on all publication issues.Other responsibilities for the senior technical author are ensuring the accuracy and quality of publications. This requires the checking and editing of technical documentation before publication. I ensured that all relevant engineering approval is obtained before publication. Training of new personnel to the department was also a function of this role. Basic training in technical publications procedures and standards is given, such as Simplified English, Standardized General Mark-up Language (SGML), ATA2100, and other relevant specifications.Recent developments in technology have led to the introduction of SGML, XML, CD-ROM and Web publishing of documents.
