Dr. Walt Silva is a Senior Research Scientist in the Aeroelasticity Branch at the NASA Langley Research Center. Dr. Silva received his B.S. in Aerospace Engineering from Boston University. He spent two summers working at NASA Langley Research Center with Dr. E. C. Yates, Jr. and the Aeroelasticity branch.He worked for the Grumman Aerospace Corporation, the Propulsion group/Advanced Systems group, performing advanced configuration designs. He performed computational/experimental identification of boundary layer control. As a Grumman Master's Fellow, earned an M.S. in Aerospace Engineering, Polytechnic Institute of NY., touring different groups: Loads & Dynamics, Flight Controls, and Powerplant. In the Loads & Dynamics group, performed flutter analysis of the JVX (Tiltrotor) empennage and the Shuttle Trainer Aircraft.Joined the Aeroservoelasticity (ASE) branch at the NASA Langley Research Center. He performed aeroelastic (AE)/ASE analyses of several vehicles, including the experimental X-Wing vehicle. Performed linear/nonlinear AE analyses of the Active Flexible Wing (AFW) wind-tunnel model using the CAP-TSD CFD code.In 1990, joined the Unsteady Aerodynamics branch. Research included application of Volterra theory to nonlinear unsteady aerodynamics and consultant/test engineer for the Benchmark Models Program.In 1997, Dr. Silva earned his PhD in Applied Mathematics from the College of William & Mary. In 2000, he received the NASA Exceptional Achievement Medal for his work in Volterra theory. Dr. Silva is currently the Technical Lead for AE/ASE for NASA's High Speed Project. He is involved in the development of unsteady aerodynamic/AE/ASE Reduced-Order Models, frequently invited to teach short courses on related topics at organizations around the world. Granted Patent for his ROM work and is currently an Associate Editor for the AIAA Journal. Adjunct Professor at the College of William & Mary (Applied Science) and Old Dominion University (Aerospace).
