About Walter Dressick

Dr. Walter J. Dressick (U.S. citizen) is currently retired after completing a Staff Research Scientist position in the Chemistry Department at The Ohio State University in 2023 working with Professor Claudia Turro on the photophysics and photochemistry of dirhodium and polypyridyl Ru complexes. In his previous position at the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) in Washington, DC, his work emphasized a wide range of areas, including nanoparticle catalyst development for selective electroless plating, (photo/)chemical reactivity of organosiloxane self-assembled monolayers (SAMs), non-covalent methods for selective materials deposition onto polymer and SAM films, nanostructured polymer films exhibiting surface anisotropy (e.g., wetting, adhesion, friction), preparation of 3-D nanoscale metal structures using biological templates, and fabrication of nanostructured polyelectrolyte multilayer film composites for use as improved fuel cell electrodes and self-decontaminating coatings. During his last year at NRL, he served as a technical advisor (50% time) to the Defense Treat Reduction Agency, assisting in the evaluation of research proposals and new programs.Dr. Dressick is the co-inventor of technologies described in 43 issued U.S. patents and co-author of 108 peer-reviewed scientific publications (January 2024). Based on the journal impact factors and citations of his articles, ISI Essential Science Indicators® ranked Dr. Dressick as one of the top 1% of materials chemists worldwide during 2001-2008.Specialties: nanoparticles, surface modification, micro/nanoelectronic materials, advanced functional materials (organic/inorganic), and sensors. Experience with electroless plating, (photo/)chemical reactivity of polymer films and self-assembled monolayers, (bio/)patterning of surfaces, deep UV/x-ray lithography, proximal probe nanolithography, microcontact printing, dielectrics/oxides, organized nanoparticle composites, colloids, self-assembly, luminescent metal complexes, kinetics, and catalysis.

I have retired from government service in my positions at the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) and the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory (NRL), effective September 30, 2017 and concluded my Staff Research Scientist position at The Ohio State University on July 31, 2023. I am currently fully retired.
  • The Ohio State University
    Staff Research Scientist
The Ohio State University Aug 2019 - Jul 2023
    Columbus, Ohio, Us
I worked with Professor Claudia Turro in The Ohio State Chemistry Department to investigate and understand the photophysics and photochemistry of a series of dirhodium and polypyridyl ruthenium transition metal complexes for both solar energy conversion and various biological applications. In addition, together with Professor James V. Coe and Professor Turro, we developed a mixed infrared spectroscopy/etalon method to accurately determine the complex index of refraction of solutions of organometallic complexes as a function of wavelength.
  • Defense Threat Reduction Agency (Dtra)
Senior Consultant, Physical S&T Division Technologies Department (J9Cb)
Defense Threat Reduction Agency (Dtra) Oct 2016 - Sep 2017
    Fort Belvoir, Virginia, Us
The Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA), through its support to the Office of the Secretary of Defense and to combatant commanders, works to stop the spread, counter the effects, and prepare for the use of weapons of mass destruction, including chemical and biological agents, high explosives, and radiological and nuclear materials. The J9CB division delivers basic and applied chemical and biological agent research in support of DTRA's mission.Duties include evaluation of research proposals and assisting DTRA management in the development of new research program areas and strategic planning for basic research efforts (one-year detail assignment from NRL at 50% time).
