Studies also include high emitter chase studies, intra-community variability, and source apportionment.Commuter Exposure: Conducted field studies to characterize air pollution exposures experienced by California commuters utilizing different modes of transportation. This study utilizes a variety of handheld, low-cost equipment to quantify microenvironmental exposures of commuters to BC, PM, UFP, CO, and NOx.Low-cost sensors: Serve as in-house researcher on next generation air monitoring, low-cost sensors, and sensing technologies through collaborations with external agencies and investigators.Contracts:Soundwall: Manage a research contract investigating the use of soundwalls and vegetative soundwalls as tools for near-roadway air pollution mitigation. This study utilizes a combination of stationary measurements, mobile measurements, and micro-scale models to provide state and local planners with additional tools for near-roadway mitigation options.

Investigated the effect of size-resolved particulate matter on platelet activation using platelet aggregometry. Developed a biologically compatible extraction technique for removing particulate matter from Teflon filter substrates. Utilized a catalog of size-resolved PM filters and extracts with known concentrations of metals, ions, OC/EC, and PAHs to examine the effect of sources, size, and chemical speciation on platelet activation. Conducted statistical tests to compare size-resolved platelet activation to known toxicological contaminants, PM speciation, particle size, dosimetry, and particle sources. Source specific filter extracts (automobile, wood smoke, meat-cooking) and secondary organic aerosol will also be analyzed for toxicological effects.

Designed, built, and tested ~6m3 ozone chamber for ozone formation studies. Performed laboratory smog chamber studies to quantify ozone formation of pesticides at low NOx conditions (<20 ppbv). Conducted field experiments to collect VOCs from compost facilities to quantify VOC emissions and measure ozone formation using a portable ozone chamber. Modified an ozone box model using the SAPRC-99 and SAPRC-07 chemical mechanisms to estimate ozone formation potential for various pesticide solvents and agricultural sources to verify laboratory and field measurements. Calculated incremental reactivities for pesticide solvents of interest. Performed a pilot study to measure VOC and NOx emissions from agricultural silage for ozone formation potential studies.

Utilized Micro-Orifice Uniform Deposit Impactors, Reference Ambient Air Samplers, Particle into Liquid Samplers, Scanning Mobility Particle Sizers, and Aerodynamic Particle Sizers to collect ambient air quality filter samples and real-time measurements in support of on-going live animal health effects studies for the UC Davis EPA PM Center. Analyzed PM1.8 filter samples with various laboratory techniques including gravimetry, organic / elemental carbon, water soluble ions, trace metals, and PAHs. Incorporated size-resolved speciation data into lung deposition models to estimate human exposure. Performed an intercomparison study in which six national labs were tasked with analyzing co-located filters to examine the differences between reported X-Ray Fluorescence and Inductively-Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry data for metals analyses. Performed a molecular marker chemical mass balance source apportionment analysis to determine the source origin and impacts of sources relevant to air quality field studies.
