When I first went to vote, I had no idea who the candidates were. I guessed my way through the ballot and left feeling pretty crummy about my vote. This is a pretty common experience. Even if people try to do their research ahead of time, it takes hours, specialized knowledge, and most of the information on the web carries a heavy bias. This is a huge problem because these offices have a huge impact on our day to day lives (especially the small offices we overlook). And so long as we don’t know who the candidates are, we tend to vote down party lines, giving partisanship greater control over our politics.So my incredible team and I created Branch (www.branch.vote) — the Turbo Tax of voting. Branch is a web application where voters enter their address, and we walk them through everything on their personalized ballot: what the offices do, who the candidates are, where they stand on key issues, where they’re getting their money from. We do this all in simple, nonpartisan language.Since then, I've been trying to use the scale of tech and collective power of people to solve this problem and move our political system towards one that is more responsive.
