During my lifetime, advances in the physical sciences will propel humanity along a trek from mastery of the minute (atomically precise manufacturing) to exploration of the expanse (inter-planetary colonization). This will occur on a massive scale, as we develop a deeper understanding of the computational potential of machines (general artificial intelligence) and the ability to transform information into tangible objects in the physical world at unprecedented scales (high-throughput additive manufacturing). At the convergence of computer science, biology, mechanical engineering, chemistry and physics, my field of study in materials science and engineering with a focus in multi-scale modeling requires creativity, passion, dedication, persistence and struggle. My career has helped me enter this world and tease out some of its secrets by enabling the design of smart plastics and rubbers with superior thermomechanical properties to address applications in industrial, consumer, medical, transportation and oil and gas sectors.
