About Walter De Jong

The thing I love doing most is programming tools and doing systems programming for Linux and UNIX systems. My favorite languages are Python, C and C++ (and a fair bit of Rust). Dabbled in other languages as well but these are the ones that stick the most. Apart from just coding the code I like doing software design with an eye for optimization, figuring out how to make software work better, more efficiently. I'm interested in computer science, especially in the workings of operating systems.I have a history as sysadmin of large HPC systems, such as the CRAY C90, SGI Origin 3000, SGI Altix 3700, IBM p5-575, large Linux clusters with InfiniBand, and even home-grown DIY PC clusters with specialized accelerator hardware attached to the nodes. But the sysadmin work was always more about the software than the hardware. Back in the day, we basically did devops before it was a thing.Experience with handling multiple petabytes of data in tape libraries. Expert at CRAY/SGI/HPe DMF. Received a honorary certificate because I never did the official training course.Knowledge of various compute batch systems. Participated in European supercomputing grid projects DEISA and PRACE for many years.Another big component of my work is in the field of security. Did both operational security and policy making with the security officer for the company for over 15 years. Participated in several international security working groups all about policies.Quantum computing and quantum internet should be on this list, although my contributions were modest and in the field of software development.Programmed a number of games from scratch in my spare time. Great fun but very time consuming.I get a lot of job satisfaction from putting some creativity into my work.
