Walter chose to take a rare and unique opportunity to work with an experienced log home builder who was designing, and building his own house. Walter left DPR on good terms in order to explore and learn other points on the spectrum of construction. The project is multiple 'phases' due to available time in the building season. The project this season is a log garage using the Swedish coped log method, one of the more difficult methods. Once complete, in September a 900sf living space will be built on top of the garage. This will be two rooms, and support the roof.

San Rafael, California

Walter started on the Marin County Emergency Operations Facility toward the end of the design phase, to manage the design/build mechanical, electrical, and plumbing contractors (MEP). He assisted the lead MEP Coordinator in completion of the design. He then took over management through construction. During construction multiple MEP design changes were requested by the owner. Walter worked with the subcontractors in order to implement the changes without impacting schedule. Further into construction, Walter also managed the design and install of the security systems.The project was 118,000 sf of space including a Sheriff's dispatch room, multiple lab spaces, and 4 data rooms to run the dispatch center, and handle emergency situations. The project also implemented several high design architectural features that required close coordination with MEP trades.At the end of the project, Walter assisted in the commissioning of the project's MEP and security systems.

Colorado Springs, Colorado

On the Agilent Data Center project in Colorado Springs, Walter entered the project toward the end and assisted in managing MEP subcontractors in satisfying the owners multi-staged turnover needs. The data center amounted to approximately 2MW of white space, had paralleling backup generators, and was implementing a new Liebert DX refrigerant economizing unit for cooling. The electrical infrastructure also included A&B power delivery from service entrance gear to power on the data room floor.Walter's duties eventually turned into management of the punch list, completion of data center turnover, and assisting with project closeout documentation and financials.

Portland, Oregon Area

Walter's first full time position with DPR was the repurposing of a manufacturing building built in the mid-nineties into a wholesale data center space. His responsibilities involved the tail end of CSA submittals and RFIs, and cost management.As a joint venture, Walter was DPR's on site budget manager for GC's, and assisting the lead PM with CMiC, which was not the software used by DPR's joint venture partner. At the end of the project Walter accepted management the 42M budget, finished out approximately 500K in added work, and with assistance, closed out the final budget with the owner. One of his other responsibilities during this time was working with the LEED consultant to document and achieve a LEED Gold status for the project.

Des Moines, Iowa Area

While completing his final year at Iowa State, Walter worked for DPR Construction on a greenfield modular data center. He was involved in document control, RFI management through CMiC PM, and ensuring completion of CSA punchlist items using Latista software as tracking mechanism.

Prineville, Oregon

While an intern with DPR Construction, in 2010, Walter worked on Facebook's Prineville, Oregon data center. His responsibilities were mainly in RFI management and submittal management.

San Francisco Bay Area

During his internship, Walter worked on the UCSF Mission Bay Medical Center, which was in preconstruction at the time. He assisted with meeting minutes, providing information to CAD detailers regarding equipment changes, and secured pricing for possible changes from on site MEP subcontractors.

Iowa City, Iowa Area

While working as a laborer for Knife River, Walter worked on a two mile four lane expansion of Interstate 80 near Iowa City, Iowa.

Ankeny, Iowa

As an intern for the City of Ankeny Municipal Department, Walter gained various experience. His main focus was to review, approve, and enforce implementation of contractors' Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plans (SWPP) for single home and multiple home developments. He was also involved in some site surveying, assisting with inspections, and reviewing civil drawings.

Des Moines, Iowa Area

While a member of the AmeriCorps Vista team Walter worked for Habitat for Humanity of Greater Des Moines. In his position as a construction intern, he performed labor and led small crews of volunteers working on multiple houses in various phases of construction.
