About Walter Smith Randolph

Walter Smith Randolph is a national award-winning investigative journalist and newsroom leader. He is currently the Executive Producer of Investigations at CBS News New York, joining in November 2023.Before returning to his hometown of New York City, Walter was the Investigative Editor at Connecticut Public Broadcasting. He built and led a team of five reporters who produced long-form audio reports for the station’s NPR affiliate and documentary shows for the station's PBS channel. In just two years, the unit’s work was honored with a national Sigma Delta Chi award (Society of Professional Journalists), four regional EMMY nominations, a national and three regional Edward R. Murrow awards (RTDNA). Through fundraising efforts, the unit also expanded from three reporters to five. Walter’s experience ranges from behind the scenes to on-air as well. Before transitioning to news leadership, Walter worked as an investigative reporter and anchor in Cincinnati (WKRC), Kalamazoo-Grand Rapids (WWMT), Flint-Saginaw (WEYI) and Elmira-Ithaca (WENY).In addition to leading the investigative team at WCBS, Walter is an adjunct assistant professor at CUNY's Newmark Graduate School of Journalism. He has also taught at Quinnipiac University, Northern Kentucky University and Western Michigan University.At the National Association of Black Journalists, Walter serves as Vice President-Broadcast. He previously served as national Treasurer for three years. Walter earned a bachelor’s degree in communication from Villanova University and a master’s degree in journalism from CUNY's Newmark Graduate School of Journalism. He’s a proud member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., NABJ and Investigative Reporters and Editors.
