  Wanda E. Ward is Executive Associate Chancellor for Public Engagement, Office of the Chancellor, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, where she provides strategic leadership for the university and the broader community to advance the university's land-grant, public engagement mission. She joined the university as the Executive Associate Chancellor for Administration and University Relations, where she served as Chancellor's Chief of Staff (2018-2021).Prior to joining the university, Ward served in several senior leadership positions throughout her 26 years at the National Science Foundation, including: Senior Advisor to the Director; Head of the Office of International and Integrative Activities; Deputy Assistant Director for Social, Behavioral and Economic Sciences (SBE); and Deputy Assistant Director for Education and Human Resources. In addition, she served as Assistant Director for Broadening Participation at the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (2015-2017).Ward has served on the U.S. President's National Science and Technology Council subcommittees in SBE sciences, and science education and workforce development. At the international level, she was a member of the International Social Science Council (ISSC) Committee for Developing and Transition Economies (CoDATE) and the ISSC Executive Committee.Ward earned the BA in psychology and the Afro-American Studies Certificate from Princeton University and the PhD in psychology from Stanford University. She was awarded a Ford Foundation Fellowship; the American Psychological Association Presidential Citation; the Federation of Behavioral, Psychological and Cognitive Sciences Richard T. Louttit Award; and the U.S. Presidential Rank Award for Distinguished Executive. She served as a Fellow in the 2018-2019 University of Illinois System President’s Executive Leadership Program. Ward was appointed by President Biden to be member of the 2028 Class of the National Science Board.
