Let’s try to stick to the recent ones, as no one would be interested in knowing that as a toddler I used to eat mud and once brought down the TV trolley with me, breaking both the television and my left arm. After completing 12 years of education from APSACS, I did my bachelors from NUMS. The degree, titled as 'Social Science of Health' is first of its kind in Pakistan, making it and my batch, a very special one. Health is a very intricate entity and it has as many determinants as one can think of; it is impacted by as miniscule of an element as a virus and as extensive phenomenon as climate change. This called for a need of interdisciplinary approach that was effectively imparted during the program.I got to know about my aptitude in managerial skills when I was selected as a member of Organizing Committee for Student’s Seminar Series, a monthly departmental event for students and faculty, during the final year of my program. Owing to my involvement in the community service programs at NUMS of NUMS Kindred Kinship-NK2 (working for kidney health) and NUMS Red Ray-NR2 (that works for the cause of blood donation) I got to know about the challenges and responsibilities the come in the way with respect to management and execution of programs.My internship at IRM was a professional experience with a sheer balance of insights into an office environment and field acumen. The field visits were arranged for the interns to understand at ground level how community mobilization materialize, whereas at the office I got to know about the intricacies of project management and the efforts that are done behind the curtains to bring about effective and culturally competent community service programs. Opting for MBA might seem a detour to some in my professional path, however in my opinion it highlights the essence of Social Science of Health as an interdisciplinary field. Health, in modern times, have become a commodity with a globalized west influenced practices applied universally. It is a common quote that ‘Health is Wealth’ but my friend rightly pointed out that in contemporary times ‘Wealth is Health.’ I am interested in understanding health and medicine from the managerial and economic perspective to be able to bring about change, where it is possible, so that more effective practice with the essence of cultural competence can be carried out.
