Warren Adelson founded his first gallery in Boston in 1964. A popular Newbury Street fixture, Adelson Galleries exhibited the Boston Impressionists and 19th-century American landscape and figure painting. In 1972, Mr. Adelson joined Knoedler Galleries in New York, where he worked on the development of their American paintings department. In 1974, he joined Coe Kerr Gallery, New York and became a partner the following year. There, he organized many notable exhibitions and catalogues of American Impressionist painters including Mary Cassatt, Maurice Prendergast, and John Singer Sargent.In 1990, Mr. Adelson re-established Adelson Galleries in New York, specializing in 19th and 20th-century American art. Today, Adelson Galleries is distinguished for its expertise in the fields of American Impressionism, Realism, and Modernism. The gallery regularly exhibits works by artists such as George Bellows, Frank Benson, Mary Cassatt, William Merritt Chase, Thomas Wilmer Dewing, Thomas Eakins, Childe Hassam, Winslow Homer, Maurice Prendergast, John Singer Sargent, Edmund Tarbell, and Andrew Wyeth, among others. In addition, Adelson Galleries represents several contemporary artists including Jacob Collins, Andrew Stevovich, Stephen Scott Young and Jamie Wyeth.Mr. Adelson is also an internationally recognized authority on John Singer Sargent. He initiated scholarship on the John Singer Sargent Catalogue Raisonné in 1980 in partnership with the artist's great-nephew, Richard Ormond. The first seven volumes of the Catalogue Raisonné have been published by Yale University Press with further volumes to follow. Volume IV was awarded First Place for Scholarly and Reference Books at the 2007 New York Book Show Awards. Mr. Adelson was also among the noted Sargent scholars who authored Sargent Abroad: Figures and Landscapes (Abbeville Press, 1997). His recent publication, Sargent’s Venice (Yale University Press, 2006), won the Award of Merit at the 2007 New York Book Show.
