At sixteen I was a tour guide at Stone Mountain Park that told tales of the many ghosts that haunted the Antebellum Plantation, my very first job. I was saving up money for college to become a preschool teacher, having graduated two years early in order to work full-time. I enjoyed working there as it gave me an unprecedented responsibility to entertain the guests and to learn the history and fun tales about the park. But then real life happened and helping support my newly divorced mother and little brother, who had a chronic illness, became more important than my dreams of teaching children. I spent the next nine years bouncing back and forth between leadership and marketing positions for Chick-Fil-A and entertaining children at the Disney Store. Through Chick-Fil-A's scholarship I began taking a couple classes a semester at the Dunwoody campus of Georgia Perimeter College. As an avid history lover, my pathway with Georgia Perimeter was in history. Over the years, I have been asked many times what I plan on doing with a history degree, but I was never too sure how to answer. Choosing history as my major was more about what I could learn from the many different classes I would need to take and how I could use what I learned outside of college. The skills acquired from the degree are the ability to extensively research, think critically, and creatively problem solve. After meeting my husband, I relocated to a rural area of Northeast Georgia just outside of Athens, and at the same time a position as the Children's Program Specialist at the local library opened up. My love for storytelling and children all rolled into one incredible opportunity! After accepting the position, I have thoroughly enjoyed the roll as Children's Program Specialist for the Commerce Public Library. Because of this position, I am currently attending Georgia Perimeter College for a degree in History, with a plan to ultimately pursue a Master's in Library Science. With that master's degree, my life goal is to become a Children's Librarian. I have always balked at stagnant office-style workplaces. The environment at the library is so unique and everchanging on a daily basis, I am truly flourishing there. Some days I am working on the month's programming schedule and other days I am trying to hand feed a baby praying mantis. Children bring their own special energy to my programs, and I must adapt to every situation that I am faced with.
