My sterile processing career started over 40 years ago at a small hospital on the New Jersey coast. The processes we used in sterile processing at that time vastly differ from today. The sterile processing department has become more technical than ever before. As a director, manager, educator, and mentor over the last 34 years, my goal has been to evolve the expertise of those around me. The exception is that I did not stop at the Sterile Processing Department. Engaging Surgical Services, Infection Control, Risk Management, and other departments like Environmental Services creates an environment for success—a partnership designed to keep our patients safe while establishing great customer service.Keeping abreast of our ever-changing environment in sterile processing is difficult. I have been engaged with the Hospital Sterile Processing Association (formerly IAHCSMM) for over 37 years. I am a past Board Member of HSPA's Foundation. I am a Subject Matter Expert for all four HSPA certifications, an AAMI workgroup member, and a Past President of the Mid-Atlantic Central Service Association.My most recent accomplishment was to complete the technical writing for the sterile processing chapters for the World of Surgical Instruments for Animal Health, published by Rick Shultz at RMPS Publishing.
