I am part of the team that manages the University’s managed workstation estate, this covers over 10,000 staff machines, 4,000 student cluster machines and several hundred laptops.This involves a wide range of duties such as system management using both Microsoft System Centre Configuration Manager 2007 and 2012 as well as Group Policy; application packaging both standard and virtual using Flexera AdminStudio and InstallShield along with Microsoft Application Virtualization Sequencer and ORCA following industry standard best practice to deploy the applications; Antivirus management (McAfee ePolicy Orchestrator and Sophos Enterprise Console); patch management using WSUS and SCUPWe employ Lean Methodology, namely Kanban in order to work more efficientlyFor the last 12 months I have trained up a team of packagers in order maintain a high standard of distributable applications that are used by over 40,000 students and 10,000 staff.I also ensure that the managed estate is kept secure. This involves keeping antivirus software up-to-date, browsers patched with latest helper plugin (e.g. Flash Player, Java JRE etc.). This involves thorough testing to ensure that business critical services function as expected after updates and liaising with all necessary parties.The role also involves liaising with suppliers and technical support where required and also 3rd line support to IT colleagues at the University. I create documentation and knowledgebase articles when required which aids 1st and 2nd support as well as other members in the team ensuring there is not a single point of failure. This is done using ITIL standards.In my time at the University, I have also worked in 1st /2nd line support and application support before my current role. This enabled me to build up a wide range of technical skills and diagnostic skills which are still used today as well as liaising with internal customers and external suppliers even down to licence negotiations.
