In 1974, my first and best boss, Floyd Hoelting, told me he was going out of town to do some consulting work. I asked him to describe his work. He explained that he trained, developed, and coached and mentored individuals and provided organizational development (“OD”) work to enhance an organization’s success. I could see the deep fulfillment he got from maximizing other’s creative intelligence and how rewarding it was to help organizations be more effective and efficient. I was immediately hooked! I realized then. “This is what I want to do with my life.” My reading and learning helped me recognize that my deep interests were in leadership and strategy. After my MBA and PhD work, I formed The Leadership Group in 1986 and began full-time work in the field. I have enjoyed with tremendous pleasure work with over 50,000 government and private corporations participants from all organizational levels in over 75 corporations and with over 100 U.S. government agencies. I have worked throughout the United States and in Mexico, El Salvador, Honduras, Panama, Peru, the UK, Germany, Hungary, Georgia, Kosovo, Kazakhstan, Egypt, Morocco, Cameroon, Uganda, Malawi, Ghana, India, Jordan, Indonesia, and China.My first two books (e.g., The Nine Natural Laws of Leadership - AMACOM, 1995 and, The 108 Skills of Natural Born Leaders - AMACOM 2001) offer the key distinction between being the “boss” and being a “true leader:” a person gains willing followers. Most books, webinars, and training do not distinguish between being “in charge” - having formal authority - with being a leader. I believe this suppresses the emergence leaders at all levels. Three subsequent books have refined and extended these themes.I am forever thankful for the seed that Floyd planted 40+ years ago.
