It was 219 years after the inauguration of George Washington before America elected a Black president. Why is this significant? The election of Barack Obama in 2008 expanded what countless Black children could see as possible. It was no longer imaginary, but reality.I share that historical reference to help you gain insight into what drives Warren Z. Colter. Many just see me as a well-accomplished leader, but how did it all begin?Growing up, I didn’t know of any Black executives or CEOs of national companies. I did personally know excellent teachers, ministers and senior officers of the military whom I admired greatly. As I was beginning my college experience, doors were just starting to crack open for African Americans in corporate leadership. I wanted to take on the challenge of these new opportunities and hopefully become a CEO one day.We all have our first job stories. Mine was as a dishwasher at a local diner when I was 14. My next one was selling shoes at a regional discount store. As I look back, it is interesting how my job as a 15-year-old sales clerk began my career in marketing and sales.I went on to have some pretty notable positions in finance, marketing and sales leadership including several VP roles. The secret sauce to my sales and marketing success has been understanding the quality relationships customers and consumers can have with the brands they trust and love. This is how I have been able to consistently accelerate profitability and market share.As I blazed a trail in the corporate world, I never lost sight of my goal of becoming a CEO. In 2018 I achieved this. I don’t take this accomplishment for granted. I’m fully aware that I’m in a small, but slowly growing group, even more so as the leader of a German Company in the U.S. I will continue to learn and lead with the standard indicative of a Morehouse Man.On a personal note, I’ve been blessed to be inspired by my beautiful and talented wife Cynthia through the years. We love to travel and enjoy the creative and performance arts. We are extremely proud of our daughter Amina and our son-in-law Jason.
