Business development role within Rio Tinto’s largest operating division (divisional gross revenue $23 billion).• Led the integration programme associated with the proposed combination of the West Australian iron ore business with BHP (15 work streams) and represented Rio Tinto at competition commission hearings in Europe and Asia. Drove collaboration and relationship development between the parties, through to Chief Executive level.• Drove the commercial strategy for the world's largest proposed single mining development in Africa. Responsible for the development of technical and financial studies in support of the project. Represented and advocated effectively at the highest levels of business, financial institution and government interaction in Africa, China, Europe and the USA. Managed the partnership interface across multiple stakeholders including Chinese SOEs, the World Bank and Government.• Rio Tinto director / representative on associated company boards, joint ventures and advisory committees.Achievements- Following two years of negotiations, signed and ratified a bankable investment framework materially reducing project risk and expropriation exposure- Established an effective integration mechanism for the proposed iron ore joint venture and presented the case for consolidation to the European Competition Commission in Brussels

Developed the West Australian iron ore expansion strategy including ‘Pilbara Beyond 220’ and the ‘Integrated Organisational Design’ model. The work led to the current 360Mtpa business and operational model. Overall accountability for developing study frameworks so as to maximise the value of new developments, evaluating all critical aspects of study concepts, risk management and change management. Project management to ensure alignment of accountabilities including providing study context & guidance; negotiating resourcing gaps; developing an emerging markets procurement strategy for major capital items; and development of the study team. Managed the pipeline of associated infrastructure and mine development studies covering all aspects of the associated mine planning, financial, environmental, procurement and engineering requirements. Secured timely Board approval for expansion projects.Achievements- Secured Board approval of a ~US$15 billion proposal to develop the Pilbara operations as designed- Produced the concept design for what is now the iron ore operations centre - a state-of-the-art facility that enables remote single location operability of multiple mine, port and rail systems to optimise mining, maintenance and logistic activities across the West Australian operations

Achievements- Led an independent review (on behalf of the Chairman) on a potential multi-billion dollar corporate acquisition that resulted in the company withdrawing from a likely bidding war- Realised major project funding initiatives including a US$300 million senior debt facility and a US$130 million rights issue

Managed the operational support functions of both businesses after commencing with North Limited as Group Accountant, Forestry. Developed commercial policies and procedures covering finance, supply, contracting and logistics functions, and ensured the provision of cost effective procurement functions (including e-procurement) and a reduction in the cost of business inputs. Undertook the secretariat role to the Northparkes joint venture policy committee including liaison with Japanese participants; preparation of policy papers; and committee minutes. Risk management, including establishment of site risk profiles, insurable risk coverage, internal and external audit, commodity and currency hedging, and general commercial protection for the business. Drove the strategic and business planning process, including life-of-mine and five-year plan analysis.
