The nanoscale world of quantum physics follows profoundly different rules than our everyday experience. My research broadly aims to develop tools to observe and control this quantum behaviour, and to apply them to build quantum optomechanical technologies with applications in areas ranging from navigation and geological surveying, to biomedical imaging, communications and computation.Among other research, my laboratory has pioneered the application of quantum techniques in magnetometry, acoustic sensing and microscopy of biological systems; and to control and study superfluid helium, an exotic quantum liquid and building block for future quantum technologies.Quantum technologies have transformational emerging applications from bioimaging, to medical diagnostics, pharmacology, computation, and geological surveying. I am committed to converting these opportunities into lasting socioeconomic benefits. I expect quantum technologies to be particularly transformational for the life sciences, allowing us to see biology with better resolution, better contrast and deeper into the organism, and allowing us to observe and simulate the dynamics of molecules with unprecedented precision.
